IP protection class

The IP protection class standardizes the level of protection equipment offers against dust and water. The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) specifies protection classes with symbols.
This page explains the IP protection class related to our product specifications.

What is the IP protection class?

The protection class is based on two standards, one from the IEC and one from the JIS. The protection classes set up by the Japan Industrial Standard (JIS 0920) express levels of water and dust proofing as defined by the JIS. The standard set up by the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission, IEC 60529) expresses levels of protection against the intrusion of human body parts and solid objects, and also provides a protection classification (IP Code) for water proofness.
The details of both standards are nearly identical. The IP standards are explained below.

IP code

The IP code contains codes for two protection classes .
Basically, they consist of the 1st symbol (protection against human body parts or solid objects entering the device) and a 2nd symbol (protection against water intrusion). Take IP68 as an example, the 6 expresses the level of protection against the intrusion of body parts or solid objects and the 8 expresses the level of protection against water intrusion. If either of the protection classes is unspecified, an X is used in that position.

Description of IP protection levels

Descriptions for the 1st symbol

Protection against the intrusion of human body parts and solid objects
Symbol Type Protection level
0 No protection No special measures were taken for protection.
1 Protected against intrusion of solid objects larger than 50 mm Designed and built so that large flat parts of the human body, such as a hand, cannot touch charged components or moving parts inside the equipment. Designed and built so that solid objects exceeding 50 mm diameter cannot get inside the device.
2 Protected against intrusion of solid objects larger than 12.5 mm Designed and built so that a finger tip or similar object shorter than 80mm cannot touch charged components or moving parts inside. Designed and built so that solid objects exceeding 12.5 mm diameter cannot get inside the device.
3 Protected against intrusion of solid objects larger than 2.5 mm Designed and built so that the tip of a solid such as a tool or wire with a diameter or thickness greater than 2.5mm cannot get inside.
4 Protected against intrusion of solid objects larger than 1.0 mm Designed and built so that the tip of a solid such as a tool or wire with a diameter or thickness greater than 1.0mm cannot get inside.
5 Dust protected Dust is prevented from getting inside. Designed and built so that the entrance of small amounts of powder inside the device will not affect the normal operation of that equipment.
6 Dust tight Designed and built so that dust cannot enter inside.

Description for the 2nd symbol

Water intrusion protection
Symbol Type Protection level
0 No protection JIS C 0920 No special measures were taken for protection.
1 Protection against water drops JIS C 0920 Designed and built so that is not affected by a vertical water drops.
2 Protected against water drops when the device is tilted up to 15?away from vertical. JIS C 0920 When a device is tilted up to 15 degrees away from its normal vertical position, it should not be affected by water dropping vertically.
3 Protection against water spray JIS C 0920 Must not be affected by water sprayed up to 60 degrees away from vertical.
4 Protection against splashing water JIS C 0920 Must not be affected by water splashing from any direction.
5 Protected against water jets JIS C 0920 Must not be affected by a direct water jet from any direction.
6 Protection against powerful water jets JIS C 0920 No sign of water intrusion after equipment is exposed to a powerful water jet from any direction.
7 Protection against immersion in water JIS C 0920 No sign of water intrusion should be found after the device is immersed in water for a certain period at a specified pressure.
8 Protection against submergence JIS C 0920 Applied when a product is submerged in water continuously under the conditions specified by the manufacturer*. In principle, the device is hermetically sealed.

* Test conditions used by Yamamoto Electric Industry
Submerge the product to be tested in water for 10 hours at a pressure of 0.3MPa. Repeat this cycle 4 times. No water should be found inside the product.
Case cover and cable through hole must be provided under our provisions.
